National Donut Day and its Military Connection:
Did you know that National Donut Day falls on the first Friday of June each year? It stems from the doughnut fundraiser initiated by The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 to honor members who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. National Donut Day owes its existence in part to a doctor in the military during WWI who aimed to uplift the spirits of wounded soldiers he treated. On his first day at the Military Base, he purchased 8 dozen doughnuts, distributing one to each soldier under his care. Lieutenant General Samuel Geary, moved by this gesture, initiated a fundraiser, enabling the doctor, Morgan Pett, to continue providing doughnuts to his patients. This collaboration with The Salvation Army led to the establishment of social centers providing various amenities, including doughnuts, to soldiers. In 1917, The Salvation Army embarked on a mission to offer spiritual and emotional support to U.S. soldiers in France during WWI. Volunteers set up small huts near the front lines, offering soldiers clothing, supplies, and, of course, baked goods. Faced with challenges in serving baked goods due to hut conditions and limited rations, Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance ingeniously began frying donuts in soldiers' helmets. These delectable treats not only boosted morale but also endeared themselves to many soldiers. Dubbed "Donut Lassies," these women are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States upon the return of troops ("Doughboys") from war. During WWI, Donut Lassies served coffee and donuts to soldiers in the trenches. Donuts were not the primary reason for The Salvation Army's presence in the fighting zones; rather, they aimed to provide spiritual aid and comfort to American soldiers and their allies, serving as a link to home and family. In summary, National Donut Day holds a special place in our hearts as it was conceived to raise awareness, bolster troop morale, and support The Salvation Army's fundraising efforts.
